LICORICE & ROSIN: Davies, Benjamin, Birtwistle, Ades, Barry & Britten
This program features three clarinets, three violas and three cellos in a cavalcade of late 20th century British music. Its name comes from the slang for clarinet and the substance that allows strings to speak, rosin. Highly virtuosic and boundary-pushing music by Peter Maxwell Davies, Harrison Birtwistle and Gerald Barry is featured alongside the witty lyricism of George Benjamin and the probing last thoughts of Benjamin Britten. Two of the standout chamber ensemble works of Thomas Ades that garnered international attention complete a daring and adventurous program.
Clarinets: Donald Foster, Stuart Clark & James Sullivan; violas: Alma Lisa Fernandez, Robert Brophy & Like Maurer, cellos: Erika Duke,Trevor Handy & Timothy Loo, are joined by percussionists Kenneth McGrath & Lynn Vartan, as well as pianist Gloria Cheng. The Denali Quartet will play Arcadiana by Ades.
