OUTDOOR INSIGHTS: Janacek, Haas & Radulescu
This program is linked the the March concert INDOOR OUTPOSTS by the figure of Pavel Haas, Janacek's most important student and one of music's greatest losses to the Holocaust. This unusual introducion to an exploration of the Jewish musical dispora focuses on the great Czech composer. Although non-Jewish, Janacek's language was deeply rooted in folk music and village life of the Bohemian region. Radulecu's ascent as the most interesting Romanaian composer since Enescu was cut short in 2008. His Second Piano Sonata belies some of the eccentricity associated with Gypsy culture, as well as a spirituality akin to Janacek's nature worship.
This concert will mark the Jacaranda debut of the remarakable Australian pianist Liam Viney. Denali Quartet will give their first perfoormances of two strongly linked quartets. One is the work of a very talented student, the other a masterpiece of the 20th century quartet literature.
