INDOOR OUTPOSTS: Haas, Korngold, Schreker & Schoenberg
Pavel Haas continued the venerable tradition of Czech composers who were particularly skilled at writing serenades for winds. His engaging quintet teases us with a potential next step toward wind music of the Jazz era, before that possiblity was lost. Franz Schreker had much more success, especially with this haunting Chamber Symphony, before the politics of Anti-Semitism foreclosed his career. Both Schoenbeg and Korngold fled from Vienna to Hollywood. The last fruits of Korngold's concert music style are contained in this post-war memoire. Schoenberg achieved stunning maturity with his First Chamber Symphony long before his destiny brought him to the USA.
Four ensembles of artists familiar to Jacaranda audiences for their superb musicianship and engaging stage presences include wind players: Pamela Vliek Martchev, flute, Donald Foster, clarinet, Rong-Huey Liu, oboe, Teag Reeves, horn, and Rose Corrigan, bassoon, as well as the Denali Quartet and their distinguished colleagues. Mark Alan Hilt conducts the two chamber symphonies.
