A piece by Britten inspired by the Japanese Noh play Sumidagawa.
Britten and Pears traveled in 1956 to Japan, where they experienced one of the greatest examples of Noh theater, Sumidagawa, in which a traditional all-male ensemble told the story of a distraught noblewoman driven mad by the kidnapping of her son. In 1964, Britten translated the story to the medieval church tradition of mystery plays and created a chamber opera (without conductor) of uncanny beauty and emotional power, written for Pears, Curlew River.
